any of several awards given each year by New York theatre critics (= newspaper and magazine writers who give their opinions about plays performed). The awards were first given for the 1935–36 season by members of the New York Drama Critics Circle. Winning plays have included Three Tall Women (1993–94) by Edward Albee and Arcadia (1994–95) by Tom Stoppard.
